Finding my daughter is the most wonderful thing that has ever happened to me.

Finally, shortly after my father’s death, I was back home visiting and my now–ex-wife called and asked if she could stop by and see me. She came over and we talked for a little while. Once again, I poured out my heart to her and asked her to help me find our daughter. This time, she relented, and told me the name of the service that had handled the adoption. Shortly afterwards, I contacted the agency. Unfortunately, they were legally barred from telling me much of anything. I did, however, learn which state the adoption had occurred in. I was also told which state office I could register with, so that if my daughter were ever to try to find me, they could pass along my contact information. I would call the office every month or two to see if they had heard anything. I was always told “no.”

One day, after several years of calling, a new manager answered the phone. Young and friendly, she was the first person at the office who ever really listened to me. She said she would try to write or call the old numbers and addresses that they had on file. No luck. But one day, out of the blue, this helpful young woman called to tell me that she had reached the adoptive mother. She had explained what she was calling about and was delighted when the mother blurted out: “Oh, good. She has been looking for him, too!”

Once I had my daughter’s number, I sat in front of my phone for what seemed like forever. What do you say to your firstborn child after thirty-two years? Finally, I got up the nerve and called her. We were on the phone for over five hours that night, and five hours each of the next two nights. On the fourth night, she said to me, “I hope you don’t mind, but I’ve bought a plane ticket. I’m coming to see you tomorrow and can stay for a few days.” I was so happy I couldn’t sleep all night.

The next day, my wife and I drove to Phoenix to meet her at the airport. We waited and watched all the people walking out of the terminal gate. All of a sudden this beautiful young lady appeared, coming down the walkway.

“That’s her,” I told my wife.

“How do you know?”

“I just know.”

As she came closer, I called out her name. Yes, it was her. We hugged each other and just stood there holding each other and crying. We all came back to our home and spent several days just talking and looking at pictures and calling her sisters. Shortly after that, my wife and I went to visit her in Minnesota and spent a week getting to know her and her husband and our two new grandchildren. Since then we have become very close, spending holidays together and visiting whenever we can.
